How to Get Hunter Education Certified in Alabama

Alabama

Who needs hunter education in Alabama?

Alabama law requires anyone born on or after August 1, 1977 to complete an approved hunter education program before purchasing an Alabama hunting license. The requirement is tied to buying the license: the certification is checked when you buy your first license, and you show it once rather than every year.

Useful details around that rule:

  • Hunter education is available starting at age 10. A hunting license is not required until age 16, so younger hunters can complete the course early and be ready when they turn 16.
  • Hunters under 16 do not need a hunting license in Alabama, but they must hunt under the supervision of a licensed adult.
  • The requirement applies to nonresidents hunting in Alabama the same as residents.
  • Alabama recognizes hunter education certification completed in other states, so if you are already certified elsewhere, you do not need to take the Alabama course.
  • A few groups are exempt from the requirement: active duty U.S. military personnel, Alabama residents who are active members of the National Guard, and certified law enforcement officers employed in the state.

The supervision required option

Alabama gives first time license buyers a mentor option called “supervision required.” Instead of completing hunter education first, you can buy a license with supervision required status and hunt only while you stay within 30 feet and normal voice control of a properly licensed adult who is at least 21 years old.

It is a legal way to try hunting with a mentor before committing to the course. It is not certification. You cannot hunt on your own under it, and the restriction stays on your license until you complete an approved hunter education course. Most new hunters are better served by finishing the course once and being done with the requirement for life.

The three steps to certification

1. Complete the online course

The CertifiedHunter Alabama course is approved by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and built to IHEA-USA standards. It covers the same material as the traditional classroom course: safe firearm handling, hunting laws and regulations, hunting ethics, wildlife identification and conservation, archery and muzzleloading basics, first aid, survival, and game care.

You study anytime, anywhere, on a computer, tablet, or phone. Your progress is saved automatically, so you can finish in one sitting or a little at a time over several days. DCNR advises that online hunter education instruction generally takes approximately eight hours. The course costs $28.95, paid once. There are no extra CertifiedHunter fees after that.

Ready when you are!

2. Pass the official online exam

At the end of the course you take the official Alabama hunter education exam online. If you do not pass on the first try, you can take it again. Exam attempts are unlimited and free, so a failed attempt costs you study time, not more money.

3. Print your certificate and buy your license

Pass the exam and you can instantly print your Hunter Education Certificate. That is the end of the process. There is no field day to schedule, no classroom to attend, and nothing left to complete in person.

Your Alabama certification is good for life. It never expires and never needs to be renewed, and Alabama certification is recognized by the other states and Canadian provinces where hunter education is required.

With your certificate in hand, your next step is the hunting license itself. Our companion guide walks through it: How to Buy a Hunting License in Alabama.

Questions new Alabama hunters ask

Is the online course really the whole requirement in Alabama?
Yes. Alabama allows the entire hunter education requirement to be completed online through an approved course. Unlike some states, there is no in person field day after the online portion.

How much does it cost, and how long does it take?
The CertifiedHunter Alabama course costs $28.95, once. DCNR advises that online instruction generally takes approximately eight hours, and because your progress is saved, you can spread that across as many sittings as you like.

What if I fail the exam?
You review the material and take it again. Attempts are unlimited and free.

I was born before August 1, 1977. Do I need the course?
No. The requirement applies to hunters born on or after that date. Many experienced hunters in the exempt group still take the course as a refresher, but the state does not require it of you.

Can my child take the course?
Yes, starting at age 10. Children under 16 do not need a hunting license in Alabama, but completing hunter education early means the certification is already done when they turn 16 and buy their first license.

Is there a free way to do this?
Yes, and you should know about it. DCNR offers free in person hunter education classes around the state, taught by DCNR staff and certified volunteer instructors. The trade is your schedule: a set class date and a full day in a classroom, instead of your own pace at home. The online course exists for people whose schedules do not fit a class.

Does my Alabama certification work in other states?
Yes. Hunter education certification is recognized across the United States through reciprocity between states, and DCNR confirms Alabama certification is recognized by all 50 states and Canadian provinces where certification is required.

What if I lose my certificate?
Replacement hunter education cards for Alabama are issued through the state agency, DCNR. Contact DCNR or use its online replacement card service. Keep a photo or scan of your certificate somewhere safe so you always have the number.
